Relay For Life of Black Hawk County

Team Sherry

A beautiful life...that left us too soon. For over 20 years Sherry Schumacher was a vital part of the behind the scenes team that makes our group of 4 radio stations run. In 2015 Sherry was diagnosed with breast cancer. Never one to just sit back and accept defeat, Sherry focused her determination to not letting this disease beat her. After going through chemo and a mastectomy, doctors told her that the cancer had been removed. Over the next several years Sherry remained vigilant to continue treatments to make sure the cancer remained at bay. Earlier this year while experiencing intestinal issues, the doctors told her the cancer had returned, this time it set its sights on her liver. Again Sherry was totally focused on beating this foe once again. This time the cancer was too vicious and the fight would not be winnable. Early in the morning of April 11th, just 19 days before her 45th birthday, Sherry Schumacher was taken from us. She left behind a loving husband Mark, who is the Chief Engineer for our group of stations, and a beautiful little girl, Rachel who will be finishing kindergarten this year. When you are in radio you are a part of a very close family and many of us had worked with and had become close friends with Sherry and Mark. We wanted to do something not only to honor and remember this precious life. But Sherry would be furious if we made this about her. She always put others first and she would want us to use our resources to help others who are battling cancer so that their fight may be a successful one. This is why we “Relay”...We invite you to join “Team Sherry” and help us raise the funds needed so that one day a cure to this tragic disease might be found.

Cancer has touched all of us in some way. And we want to stop this disease in its tracks. We’ll spend the next few weeks fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we’ll honor the lives lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly help others.

This spring, we lost our good friend Sherry. She worked with us for over 20 years. In her honor, we've formed a Relay for Life team.

Funds raised support cancer patient programs and groundbreaking research that can help save lives. This event also celebrates over 15.5 million cancer survivors nationwide. 15.5 MILLION. That’s huge.

Together, we’ll be a part of making a difference in this important cause.
