$2,439.87 raised $10,000 goal
My name is Grant Crim and I would like to share with all of you, the reason I Relay.
I was only a baby when my parents found out I was sick. At the time they didn't have a lot of money and were being bombarded with medical bills. The expense of having to drive to Portland for oncology visits was getting to be a lot. Then someone told them about the American Cancer Society. They helped my parents find hotel rooms that we could stay at during our numerous visits. I don't know what we would have done without that help.
When I was 2, I was invited to attend a survivor celebration as the youngest cancer survivor in Coos Bay. I have been attending it ever since. When I was 5 years old I was invited to be the Grand Marshal of the Coos County Relay along with my new best friend Jessica McClay who was also a survivor. We also co-captained our first team the following year and raised lots of money for cancer research.
When I got sick again about 5 years later, I struggled with all of the chemo and sickness and REALLY struggled with the loss of my vision. My mom and I were in Eugene one weekend visiting her best friend and she talked us into going to the local Relay. I was feeling really sick and weak but I wanted to go anyway. When I tried to complete the survivor lap, I couldn't do it. I had to stop to rest on the side of the track. As I sat there watching all of the survivors continue on, I couldn't help but be inspired by their willingness to fight. Their loved ones lined the sides of the track clapping and cheering them on. When I got home that night, the impact of the hope that Relay could inspire in people really hit me. I wrote a song that night and asked my friend, Ryan Reyna to help me put it to music. We had it copyrighted and I dreamed of one day, having it played at our Relay back home. I saw that dream happen the following year.
Through the years, my role in Relay has increased from starting off as a survivor celebration participant, to being the grand marshal, to co-captaining a team, to being a member of the $1000 club, to now chairing the Team Development Committee at 16 years old. Relay has become so very personal for me. I want to inspire others and help raise money to end their need to fight once and for all. I'm not going to stop until we have a cure for cancer and we can't do that without your help. Your participation, and your encouragement of others to participate, can make that dream a reality.
My name is Grant Crim....I'm a survivor......and I'm making HOPE happen!
