April 2015 – Survivor Spotlight

April Survivor Spotlight - Monica S.

Hi. My name is Monica, and this is my cancer story.

In October of 2013, I received a call from my doctor I was not expecting. He informed me that my biopsy came back positive for cancer. It was skin cancer and it was melanoma. Wow! What a shock and I didn’t expect that at all. But it was what it was, and at that moment reality hit home. Surgery was scheduled for a week later. I had an inch and a half cut out of the outer part of my right armpit. After this was done, I was told to come in yearly

for my check-ups. At the next one I went to, I had some cancerous spots that were found and removed. So I now have to go in every six months. I am not quite a year cancer free since my last check-up. But I am thankful for each and every day that I wake up. And every day that I look in the mirror, and see my scars, I know that I’m a fighter and a survivor. I won’t let cancer beat me.

Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. In fact, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the US each year than all other cancers combined. The number of skin cancer cases has been going up over the past few decades.

The good news is that you can do a lot to protect yourself and your family from skin cancer, or catch it early so that it can be treated effectively. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Most of this exposure comes from the sun, but some may come from man-made sources, such as indoor tanning beds and sun lamps.

You don’t need any x-rays or blood tests to find skin cancer early – just your eyes and a mirror. If you have skin cancer, finding it early is the best way to make sure it can be treated with success.
