LUMINARIA CEREMONY: The most moving event, once
you have seen it, you will never forget it. For those we have lost and
those who have survived. All lights are turned out and all Candles are
lite in luminary bags that surround the entire football field. It’s our
community’s opportunity to remember loved ones touched by cancer. The
Relay for Life Luminara Ceremony allows us to all come together as a
community and remember good times, tears, laughter, and cherished
moments. It’s a time for us to grieve for those we’ve lost and reflect
on how the disease has touched each of us personally taking a look
inside ourselves with quiet reflection to find HOPE
Whether our
loved one is still with us or has passed our remember ceremony
signifies the HOPE that we provide by Relaying, HOPE that we will one
day live in a world where our children, and their children, will never
know the suffering of cancer or endure the staggering feelings of
sadness and loss cancer brings. If you are interested in a Luminary
Bag with your loved ones or your name on it, please contact me. You can
decorate your own bag or our Committee will do it for you. We have, In
Memory of, In Support of and In Honor of Tags for each bag and they are
really beautiful around the track. The amount of donation for a
Luminary is $10.00.

DAVID WAYNE AND UNION
RIDGE: We are proud to Welcome David Wayne and Union Ridge to join us
in the fight. No better way to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back than
through music and with such a wonderful band. They will please the
crowd, that is for sure.
Gloucester Army Recruiting Station: SFC Taveras,
Station Commander US Army Recruiting Station in Gloucester is also
joining us in the fight. Thank you for your Service to this Country and
thank you for providing the very freedom which makes this country such a
wonderful place to live and Welcome to Relay for Life of Gloucester
County. Soldiers wear a wide assortment of insignia, ribbons, medals,
badges, tabs and patches. To the uninitiated, the variety can be
bewildering. Yet, each device represents a Soldier's accomplishment-or
that of his or her unit- and is a great source of pride and
accomplishment. As soldiers at time of war, cancer is to a war, a battle
won or defeated. Again, thank you for joining us in this war against
cancer, where you now stand on the front line once again. Army Strong.
Events and games and contest all throughout the night, and prize patrol
this year, every hour on the hour stating at 10:00 p.m. Now how about
Zumba at 4:00 am, you think that might wake you up. You know it will,
thank you Curves for all your support to help make this event
successful.
Full event news and schedule to be posted upon finalization. As I said this is just a tease!
WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE YOU MIGHT ASK?
Relay for Life will reach the milestone of 28 years of Community
presence and action against the fight against cancer. Since 1985, Relay
for Life has grown from one man Dr. Gordy Klatt, who walked, jogged and
ran a track for 24 hours raising money for his local American Cancer
Society Unit - -to a movement to eliminate cancer that now takes place
in 5,000 communities in the United States and in 19 other Countries
around the world. Just think of this, since Dr. Klatt’s Relay was
designated as the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event,
90 more lives are saved per day from cancer. This is no doubt thanks
to the Community presence that Relay for Life provides the American
Cancer Society. The face of cancer and the ability to fight it is
bought to our Community and thousands more every year, educating
citizens on how the American Cancer Society can help. All thanks to you
and millions like you.
More than 3.5 million participate in
the life-changing event. Relay is a worldwide movement to eliminate
cancer, to reinforce “CELEBRATE”, REMEMBER, FIGHT BACK to show how the
involvement of relayers has helped the American Cancer Society make
progress in research, education, advocacy, and patient services. 28
years of HOPE. HOPE that anyone facing cancer can find the care and
support they need. HOPE of a cancer free tomorrow. Cancer survivors
signify HOPE. They are living proof that we are making a difference in
the fight against cancer. Hope that during the Dark Nights of Cancer
that the sun will shine again.
WHY DO WE RELAY ALL NIGHT?
We will walk all night, because cancer never sleeps. The money we
raise will support the American Cancer Society's programs of cancer
research, education and direct services to cancer patients and their
families. This relay is not a competition, except against cancer. I'd like to welcome all of you to the Relay for Life of Gloucester.
ARE YOU READY TO FIGHT BACK GLOUCESTER COUNTY?
28 years ago a man had a vision. His vision was a world free from this
very pain and suffering we speak of. Little did this man know that the
track he ran in darkness would soon transform to a field of brilliant
luminara, each one representing a name, a face, a smile,, and a
treasured memory. And as each year passed, more people took to the track
and the flickering light beckoned this man and those who joined his
journey to go on and in time that one man’s vision became a reality.
Just as the community of Tacoma Washington decided to fight cancer
together. Relay For life is about our Community of Gloucester County
taking up the fight. At relay for life participants commit to save a
life. Maybe it’s their own; maybe the life of a family member, friend,
coworker; or the life of someone they don’t even know. However they
choose to do it, whoever it is that their actions help save, just think
of the extraordinary feeling to know that you…helped save a life. Is
there anything more powerful than that? Is there anything more powerful
than looking back at an effort made by you and your community that
leads to funds for research to treat this disease? Funds that provided
transportation for a cancer patient to their life saving treatment.
American Cancer Society needs our help to save lives.
