Why We Relay!
I have lost several family members to cancer: My maternal Grandfather, my Mother, an aunt, an uncle, a cousin, and a sister-in-law. That is way too many people to die from one disease in one family. There are many times that I think " wish my mom was here for this". I wish she had seen her grandchildren graduate from high school, I wish she could see my beautiful granddaughters. I wish she could be here for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wish, I wish. It dawned on me that wishing would not help anything. A few years ago I had the opportunity to start at team at the business I worked at. After changing jobs, I started a team at my church. Instead of wishing, I can DO something to make it better for others. I can HELP find a cure, I can HELP those suffering. I CAN HELP. That is why I Relay. Because by relaying, I can make it so someone else does not have to wish their Mother was here. She will be; because when they said the dreaded words "you have cancer", they followed with "and this is the cure".
Please join me in HELPING
Brenda Trujillo, Relay for Life Event Chair
I am a colon cancer survivor of 13 years. I joined Relay For Life of Blount County 16 years ago. I am a Christian, wife and mother. Donald and I have been married for 29 wonderful years on May 21, 2011. We have two handsome young men, Ray age 28, and Daniel age 26. I have a passion to help those who suffer with cancer. I was chosen in 2009/2010 to be a Hero Of Hope Speaker for the American Cancer Society. I traveled to 34 Relay Events around Alabama and Louisiana sharing my story of Hope. I believe with all my heart that we are much closer to finding more cures for cancer.
My Story:
On May 18, 2008 at 6:30 am our son Daniel age 22 earned his Angel Wings. Daniel suffered with colon cancer that was very aggressive, the same cancer that took my daddy age 55, my brother age 39, and grandmother age 88. I lost my best friend my mom at the age of 55 to breast cancer. I Relay For Life so hopefully one day there will be no more cancer. I promise to never give up in the fight, I will carry the torch in memory of all those gone on and in honor of those who are survivors.
