Paint The Campus Purple 3/31/10

purpledragon

In as much as we love our blue and gold, Drexel's campus needed a facelift. On Wednesday, March 31st, the Relay For Life Planning Committee and participants decided to make our mark on campus. Everything we were allowed to touch (and maybe some things we weren't?) have been transformed to a purplish hue.

Given the spirit of the event, here's some tips to help support the cause!:

1)     Wear purple.

2)     If you don't own purple clothing, body paint works, too.

3)     Okay, I realize "2" is a stretch-so how about "4"?

4)     Register for Relay For Life

This Saturday, our campus will host the fourth annual Drexel University Relay For Life. We've already raised over $111,000 during our short history on campus. This year, we are aiming to raise over $65,000 with
the help of Drexel students, staff, family and friends.

"To reiterate, we’re not asking you to give money out of your own pocket. We’re asking you to use your network of family and friends to spread awareness and solicit contributions. A little adds up to a lot!" - Nick Hoppel

Typically, teams of 8-15 participants begin walking the indoor track at the Armory, having at least 1 participant on the track for the entire 12-hour period. Teams normally stake out a "campsite" and decorate it according to your Team and Event Theme-- this year's theme being "Relay Around the World".

This event is open to ALL Drexel students, staff, family and friends.

We expect to have over 750 participants in attendance on Saturday April 10th - April 11th. We already have over 80 teams registered, including over 40 student organizations! The evening event is filled with games, live performances, free food, and heartfelt ceremonies, all tailored around a common purpose: celebrating our lives and
accomplishments, remembering those impacted by cancer, and fighting back to find a cure and make an impact.

In order to gear up for the event, teams typically host fundraisers and ask for donations from friends and family to meet their individual and team fundraising goals. Registering on the event website gives you dozens of email templates and online tools, making fundraising simple.

Cancer is a disease that has affected us all, some more than others. The American Cancer Society is the nationwide health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. As a member of the Drexel community, you have the opportunity to help the ACS significantly.

It is my pleasure to be chairing the Relay For Life committee for a second year, alongside my co-chair, John Galleo. 24 Drexel University students make up our planning committee, dedicated to serving the American Cancer Society and making "Relay" the most successful philanthropy event on campus. If you would like further information about the event or would like to get more involved, please email John (jgalleo@gmail.com) or myself (nph25@drexel.edu).

On February 20th, Drexel, UPenn, and Temple gathered at The Blockley Pourhouse to duke it out in our first ever Relay For Life Battle of the Bands. All proceeds from this event went directly to the Relay For Life fundraising efforts of each of the schools involved. Congrats to Mohava Java in their victory, a DREXEL Band!

Congratulations! 1/5/10

Why the accolades? Well, you're on your way to becoming a vital part of a great event happening right here on Drexel University's campus-- Relay For Life! If you're new to "Relay", please feel free to navigate the website to learn all about this national event sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Drexel's Relay For Life is relatively new; this is only the fourth year in production, and we've already raised over $111,000 during our short history on campus. This year, we are aiming to raise over $65,000 with the help of Drexel students, staff, family and friends.

In a nut shell, Drexel's Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight philanthropy event designed to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Teams of 8-15 participants begin walking the indoor track at the Armory, having at least 1 participant on the track for the entire 12-hour period. Teams normally stake out a "campsite" and decorate it according to your Team and Event Theme-- this year's theme being "Relay Around the World".

You can start off by becoming a Team Captain and recruiting your friends. Or, if you’d like to join an existing team, you can do that, too (I’d suggest a team that you’ve already become acquainted with).

I look forward to meeting you!
