Nowak named 2009 Volunteer of the Year in Medina County
The Colleen Snyder Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an individual in Medina County who has helped the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer, either through personal experience or by working with cancer patients and their families through their involvement in Relay For Life. The 2009 recipient of the Colleen Snyder Volunteer of the Year Award is Brunswick's own Rich Nowak. He was honored at the American Cancer Society’s Medina County Relay Wrap Up and Recognition Dinner in November.
Motivated by the loss of his daughter-in-law to cancer, Nowak has never given up. Every year he returns to Relay and gives 110% effort to raise more money and bring up new teams. For 10 years, he has embodied the strength and stamina that Colleen Snyder did. Colleen was a very passionate volunteer from the Medina relay who lost her long battle to cancer. Her family wanted her spirit to live on, and began a volunteer of the year award for Medina county. Like Colleen, Rich Nowak is dedicated to raising the necessary dollars every year to ensure that the American Cancer Society's research can go on, and that its programs and services are available to all whose lives are touched by cancer. According to Debbie Bugos, who nominated Nowak, he has been instrumental in the success of the Brunswick Relay for Life since its inception 10 years ago. His work has made an astounding difference in the community participation of the Brunswick residents. As the head football coach for Brunswick High School, he embraced the opportunity to engage the youth of the community and is instrumental for the wonderful, solid partnership between the school system, the community and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.
Nowak will appear in the event programs and at the Opening Ceremony at each of the 2010 Relay For Life events in Medina County. Learn more at www.relayforlife.org.
