Ever wonder who participates in the Milford Relay? How about this courageous young boy, Jeffrey

Jeffrey's Story

I've done Relay For Life for the past 2 years in Milford and intend to keep going. What fuels my drive is quite simple. I am here to be an advocate to the family members of those going through chemo and other treatments. I am inspired by my grandfather who has now survived cancer 3 times. He walked with me in the Survivors Lap last year. Having him there with me, cheering me on, was the best feeling ever. I have also seen loss; my grandmother's best friend, Mary or as we called her Nooie.

The first year I participated in the Relay For Life, my mom wore a t-shirt with patches that displayed the names of friends and family that have endured cancer. The number of them was unbelievable to me. About 20 were there. Wins and losses were about evenly split. Still the loss of 10 of our friends and family alone was far too many.

Last year I was an official member of my mom's team and I raised approximately $3,500. I will continue to raise money and do all that I can to help. I am currently growing my hair to donate. I started last year in June and have now reached my goal. I will cut it after graduation.

As an official walker last year I walked 4 miles in 10 hours…I did it with a little help; my walker. You see I have cerebral palsy. I was born with CP but it doesn't affect my day-to-day life. I'm used to it so I just push it aside and don't let it bother me. I use my walker in school and wear AFOs (braces) for support for I have weak lower extremities. It can affect my motor skills as well, particularly my penmanship. It's much better than it used to be, though. I consider myself lucky.

I participate in Relay because I
believe it is one more step towards
the goal we all seek…

eliminating cancer.

I have a dream that one day cancer
will not be a scare among mankind.
If it is the last great discovery ever made in medicine, so be it. But one day there will be a cure.

One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people across the country each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

This year marks the beginning of our celebration of 25 years of Relay For Life®. Sign up or donate today and join us to mark this milestone and the successes we’ve achieved together during the last 25 years.

Between September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2009, Relay For Life® communities nationwide are hosting special “Show Us Your HOPE” activities that visually depict the passion Relayers have for the fight against cancer. Ideally, these activities are separate from Relay For Life® events and demonstrate how the American Cancer Society in our community celebrates survivors, remembers loved ones lost, and fights back against cancer through Relay For Life®.
