My Reason to Relay

This will be my my third year in an American Cancer Society Relay For Life. For the past two years, I walked with a team from work in the Camp Hill Relay. It was a wonderful experience but now, it has become more personal for me. As I write this, my mom is battling lymphomia and starts chemo on Monday. Thirty years ago, she suffered a double masectomy from breast cancer. Both my dad and grandfather died from brain cancer. My grandmother died from stomach cancer while my aunt died from liver cancer.  Many cancers are self-inflicted but many are not. Why did both my dad and my grandfather die from brain cancer? Why is it everyone I know who contracted brain cancer was dead in two years? In the past year, one friend contracted leukemia. In the past year, another three women I know died from breast cancer including Tracy Rutherford for whom this team is named.

Yes, I am taking this personally!!! I am joining a team where I live. I am fighting for my family and my friends. I joined Tracy's Light. We ARE Tracy's Light. As Tracy's light, we are puting cancer in the light so people can see the disease for what it is. We are spread Tracy's light to help lead others thru the darkness in this fight. We are spreading Tracy's light by serving others as Tracy did. We are sharing Tracy's light by helping to pick up the burden's of the cancer survivors we know. We joined Tracy's Light to walk and raise funds to for the American Cancer Society. I joined Tracy's Light to honor Tracy, Bobbi Jo, Linda, Dad, Grandpa Hudson (whom I never met), Grandma Hudson, Aunt Helen. I joined Tracy's Light to honor the cancer survivors like Mom, Bev, Keith, Nancy, and Barb.

By taking part in Relay, I am helping the American Cancer Society save lives by:

• Helping people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it’s most treatable
• Helping people get well by being in their corner around the clock to guide them through every step of their cancer experience
• Finding cures by funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it and discover new ways to cure it
• Fighting back by working with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and rally communities worldwide to join the fight
