Help me 'Relay Around the World'
On January 9th and 10th, 2010 I am lacing up my shoes and running the Goofy Race-and-a-half Challenge to raise money for the American Cancer Society. I am taking on this challenge in honor of those friends and relatives who have battled cancer or been a caregiver to a cancer patient.
This will be my second time running at Walt Disney World and my first attempt at the Goofy Challenge. But the challenge of running a Half Marathon on Saturday followed by a Full Marathon on Sunday is nothing compared to the challenge faced by those who have been diagnosed with cancer. With this thought in mind I will attempt to celebrate the lives of those whose courage and strength serve to inspire me every day.
Now, your part is easy. All you need to do is commit to sponsoring me. My part is a little tougher. I’ve committed to raising $3,930 for the American Cancer Society by completing the Goofy Challenge (13.1 miles on Saturday and then 26.2 miles on Sunday) – no matter how long it takes. Please donate as generously as you can by sending in your check payable to the American Cancer Society to the address below – or online by clicking on the Donate link above. Just in case you need a little extra motivation to sponsor me, here are the top 10 reasons for your support:
10.) I’ll get up at 2:30 a.m. along with 15,000 of my closest friends to run these races. You can sleep late on that January weekend while still funding cancer research. 9.) You can transform my sneakers into a money machine as I attempt to raise $100/mile. 8.) Your donation is tax deductible. 7.) If you sponsor me then I have no excuse – I will run, walk or crawl the entire 39.3 miles. 6.) If I do not raise the total $3,930 they make me wear a shirt saying, “I came up short of my goal.” 5.) The public can access comprehensive cancer information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the American Cancer Society’s toll-free information line (1-800-ACS-2345) and Web site (www.cancer.org). During a time when so much cancer and health information is available through the Internet, much of which should be viewed with caution, the American Cancer Society is a dependable resource for accurate, unbiased information. 4.) When I first started running everyone thought I was insane. Now my friends say “Any idiot can run, it takes a special kind of idiot to run a marathon”. Help me prove them right. 3.) You can help me make it to the finish line where a whole group of characters (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, my family, etc.) will be waiting. Of course they will be ready to head to the parks, while I will be ready to replace the 3,000+ calories I burn up. Help me make it to every ice cream stand I can find. 2.) While training in 2009 I will have gone through multiple cases of Gator Aid, countless Energy Bars, five pairs of running shoes, several sticks of Body Glide, 30 lbs. of ice for my legs, and several bottles of ibuprofen. All you need to do is send in a check payable to the American Cancer Society. 1.) More than 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be reported in 2009. But, great progress has been made in the fight against cancer – the 5-year relative survival rate between 1996 and 2004 was 66%. That figure is up from 50% for the 1975 to 1977 time period. Your contribution will help fund the research and education necessary to help save more lives.
We will eventually cure cancer. Why not help find the cure a little sooner?

On November 17th I finally made it. Well, virtually.
At the beginning of this year I began logging my training miles with the intent of covering enough miles to get me to Disney World before December 31st. And after 1,045 miles I have arrived.
I still have over a month of training to complete (the Monster Month some runners call it) and should finish the year with well over 1,200 miles. While this is the most I have covered in any given calendar year it is only part of the battle. I still have a long way to go with the fundraising challenge but I will continue to work on that portion, as well.

Cindy's cousin, Aza, completed his first marathon on October 18th in Columbus. His time - an impressive 3:57:35.
When I spoke with him later that week he said all he could think about during the final miles was "I am not doing this again". Well, sorry A.J. but you are signed up for the Goofy Challenge at Disney World so you will be doing even more.
Great job!

Another Step was taken on October 11th as Josh and I ran the Towpath Half-Marathon in Peninsula.
The GOOD - it was Josh's first Half-Marathon race and we set out to run comfortably under 2 hours. He did quite well holding a less than 9 minute per mile pace and finished with a time of 1:55:07. He seems to be on target for an even better finish at Disney World.
The BAD - another runner from team Step By Step received unwelcome news from the doctor last week. Tom (my nephew) has been diagnosed with 2 slipped disks in his back and has been sidelined for up to 6 weeks. The doctor told him he may still make it to the starting line in January so we are keeping our fingers crossed.
The UGLY - for the first time in my racing career I was hit by a 'snot rocket' from another runner during the Towpath race. Just my bad timing to try and pass the guy as he let it go - skimming the fingers on my left hand. Guess I need to move a little faster when passing from now on.

On September 26th we took another Step in our Team training for the Disney Marathon weekend by entering two teams in the Akron Marathon Relay competition.
Among the 10 team members in Akron were 4 runners registered for the Half-Marathon and / or Marathon in January. Both teams finished the Akron course in just over 4 hours and 26 minutes (we were shooting to 4 hours and 30 minutes) and everyone had a great time.
Thanks to Traci, Dee, Kim, Lisa, Kevin, and Kim for helping us round out our teams for the event.

On September 20th four of us participated in the 8th Annual Cleveland Heroes Run. My wife, Cindy, sister, Gloria, brother-in-law, Tom completed the 2 mile Run / Walk. I tackled the 5 mile run.
This was the first 'official' event for Cindy and Gloria and they completed the course well under the estimated time I gave them. They are working hard in training to hit the time goals for the 5K Fun Run on January 8th and are very much on target.
Way to go team Step By Step.
