More Ways to Take up the Fight

The American Cancer Society could not do what it does without volunteers - lots of them. What follows is a list of many, but not all, volunteer opportunities available in New England.

Whether you are an athlete, like the quiet of office work, enjoy event planning, or want to work directly with cancer patients, we have a spot for you. We particularly need the help of survivors and bilingual people. .

If you find something of interest, or want to learn more, send us an email by clicking on: Volunteer Today! Or, call 1.800.227.2345 to be put in touch with your local American Cancer Society office.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
There are 21 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in New England in October 2009. We need walkers and volunteers to work at these events. To learn more about each walk - there's at least one in every New England state - visit cancer.org/stridesonline.

Daffodil Days
Nothing says spring and hope like our annual Daffodil Days campaign, a perfect volunteer opportunity for school and office workers. We need coordinators to collect donations for daffodils and volunteers to wrap and deliver the daffodils.  Flowers are delivered the first week of spring. Learn more.

Bicycles Battling Cancer
This 70-mile bike ride between Worcester and Boston - homes of two of our Hope Lodges where cancer patients can stay for free during treatment - was launched in 2009 to rave reviews. The ride will be held on July 25 in 2010. If you'd like to receive updates about this event, or if you'd like to volunteer at next year's ride, please email us at bicyclesbattlingcancer@cancer.org or call Holly Randall at 603.471.4124. The fundraising minimum in 2009 was $800.

Road to Recovery
We need volunteers to drive cancer patients to and from medical treatment facilities, providing a friendly, supportive, and reliable presence for patients who are unable to drive themselves. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, with a car, good driving record, and daytime availability.

Reach to Recovery
The Reach to Recovery program matches trained breast cancer survivors with newly diagnosed patients to answer non-medical questions and offer practical advice for facing the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from breast cancer. Volunteers must be breast cancer survivors at least a year out of treatment. An interview and successful completion of training are required.

Look Good…Feel Better
Trained, volunteer-certified cosmetologists are needed to offer hands-on, self-help instruction, and education in their areas of expertise - hairstyling and coping with hair loss, skin care, make-up and nail care - to cancer patients in group sessions, one-on-one salon consultations, and through the distribution of self-help materials. If you help women look good for a living, this is a great and rewarding opportunity to truly help them feel better, as well. Volunteers must attend training provided through the American Cancer Society.

Grassroots Advocates
Grassroots advocates help push for laws and policies at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure that cancer issues remain a priority, and that everyone has access to cancer screenings and treatment.  Learn more about the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

Make Yours A Fresh Start Family
We need people who can train personnel to integrate smoking cessation into their health care office practices. Good communication/teaching skills essential, interest /knowledge of tobacco control extremely helpful.

Cancer Resource Center Volunteers
These volunteers staff American Cancer Society resource centers located in local community hospitals in various parts of New England. They help people access cancer information, community resources, and American Cancer Society programs and services.

Office Volunteers
If you like to work behind the scenes, the American Cancer Society needs help preparing mailings, gathering and maintaining an inventory of materials, entering data, filing, and working on special projects. Your assistance will help our offices serve the public as efficiently as possible.

Volunteer Today! Or, call 1.800.ACS.2345 for more information.
