Patients receiving daily outpatient cancer treatments away from home often have difficulty finding affordable lodging over an extended period. The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge program offers free housing to the patient and a caregiver in nearly 20 cities nationwide. The Mid-South Division proudly boasts 4 Hope Lodge facilities in Birmingham, Lexington, New Orleans, and Nashville. A program in which trained volunteer cosmetologists help female cancer patients deal with the side effects of treatment by teaching them beauty techniques to enhance their appearance and self-image. A volunteer visitation program that matches breast cancer survivors with anyone who has a concern about breast cancer. The American Cancer Society provides funds to social service departments of qualifying hospitals or free-standing treatment centers that provide radiation therapy. The funds are used to assist cancer patients with recurring/chronic transportation needs, when no other assistance is available. In many metro areas, a program called Road to Recovery is also available. This program matches volunteer drivers to patients in need of a ride to treatment.
