ABOUT THE RIVALRY RUN

Seven years ago, the fraternities of Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) and Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) at the University of Michigan began two separate relay runs to raise money for the fight against cancer.  The brothers of each fraternity carried the game ball for the Ohio St. vs. Michigan football game for 30 hours in a 187-mile run from the away stadium to the home stadium each year.  Two years ago, the two Fraternities joined together to form one united run: The Rivalry Run Against Cancer.

Our fraternities have worked hard to transform the run from a small fraternity philanthropy event to the leading cancer relief fundraising event in Ann Arbor. In 2007, the two fraternities together raised nearly $80,000; this year, we managed to raise over $60,000, a particularly notable accomplishment considering the state of the American economy during the past calendar school year.

The Rivalry Run functions based on our two theories of philanthropy success.  First, a great cause is the single most important factor.  Cancer has taken a toll on our brothers, our brothers’ families, and our brothers’ friends.  We are united in our efforts, first and foremost, because we believe that we are making a difference.

Second, we believe that competition is a great motivating force.  This year, the Michigan chapter of Phi Gamma Delta will attempt to raise more money than the Michigan chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha in a friendly competition aimed at boosting our final donation.  For the previous 7 years, however, The Rivalry Run has attributed its success to donations from the Michigan chapters which strive to raise more money than their Ohio St. counterparts.  While the bragging rights may rest on the succeeding football game, our fraternities place the greatest emphasis on raising more money than our Buckeye chapters.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

As friends and family of FIJI/PIKE fraternity brothers, we are seeking your help. Each year, a substantial percentage of total funds raised for The Rivalry Run stems from the generous contributions made by people like you.  Any donation will go a long way towards helping us in our quest to raise as much money as we can for both cancer research and patient care.

We cannot thank you enough for your help. GO BLUE!
