I Relay for David -- Who showed me that bravery, courage and strength could be hidden beneath the most jovial and loving exteriors.
I Relay for Joey and Sam -- So they never have to fear that they will get what their daddy got.
I Relay for Research -- There in lies the cure and great strides have already been made to combat so many aspects of the disease.
I Relay for the Future.
I Relay.

The kids and I are moving right along. Joey is so incredibly grown up and oh so serious at times. But when you get him to laugh, you can hear David laughing right along with him. Sammy is so smart and funny, he keeps us on our toes all the time. I'm doing great, my hair has finally grown back and I just passed my 2 years 3 month check up and deemed 'still clear.' Yea! So, it is that time again...We are off and running on this year's Relay For Life. It is our chance to remember David and to give something back and raise money for research and cancer survivor/patient support.
As David's caretaker, I could only stand by and watch him fight first the cancer and then the cure. There is no test developed that could have let us know that the drugs used to have him accept the new immune system would or would not work. We had to go on faith, it was our best chance so we took it. Unfortunately, it was the cure that killed him. And I can not express my own anger at that being the case...if only we had known...we would have tried something else!!! Then I realized my own worst fears when I had to face cancer myself. It was like lightning striking our family twice! Luckily in my case, it was the treatment and a new drug that gives us hope that this is a battle I wont have to fight again. So while I am living proof that Research is working, we still have such a long way to go to finding a cure to this devestating disease.
On Saturday July 11th, the Relay For Life of Campbell will kick off at 10am at the Campbell Community Center. The cancer survivors open the Relay with a celebatory lap around the track. It will be followed by a supportive Caretaker lap and then after that we are having a Future Cancer Fighters lap. This lap celebrates all of those children (like Joey and Sam) who have been impacted by cancer and already stepped up to fight against it. I look at these children and think, this is why I Relay. So they never have to face it themselves. As the sun sets, we light candles in the luminaria that line the track in honor and memory of people who have fought (or are fighting) cancer. Last year there were over 2,000 candles lit! There is a pretty amazing ceremony where each of the persons names are read out loud into the night. It is both heartbreaking and moving. Each one of those candles, each one of those names will never be forgotten. The candles burn throughout the night, their flickering light illuminating the people walking the track. All day and all night we take turns walking the track -- cancer never rests, neither shall we.
I know times are tough. I know things are tight. But please, please donate a bit to this cause. Even if you can only donate a few dollars, we would be grateful. Every little bit counts and every little bit makes a difference.
