Welcome to Jamie's Relay Page <3

Dear friend,

Thank you for taking the time to visit my webpage.  Every summer, I choose to participate in Relay for Life, a fundraising event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is one of the largest financial contributors to the field of cancer research and services, second only to the federal government.   Cancer has unfortunately afflicted several of my close family members, as well as dear friends.  Every summer for the last 7 summers, I joined a Relay for Life team because I was tired of doing nothing while watching my loved ones suffer. This year, I choose to relay in honor of John Near, a close friend and mentor of mine. 

 John Near was my high school basketball coach and U.S. History teacher. He has been fighting courageously against cancer for the last four years, alongside his amazing family. He's been going through an incredibly difficult time lately, which only makes me more determined to work harder for this fundraiser.

John Near has been a role model for me, and for many, he exemplifies what it means to live with conviction, courage, and honor.  He's the kind of teacher that makes you think on your toes, and the kind of coach that inspires you to outrun your intimidating opponent.  He's the kind of father and husband that cooks dinner for his family, and cradles his dog until she falls asleep.  He's the kind of friend who sincerely cares to hear about how you're doing after coming back from a ridiculously stressful semester at college. 

Eleven former students and teammates have come together to form TEAM NEAR in John Near's honor. Though the proceeds do not help John or his family directly, the financial support is evidence of the fact that we will not back down in this struggle.  All proceeds are directed towards finding a cure, as well as to services for cancer patients (i.e. transportation, prevention/dection services, support groups, etc).

If you'd like to walk (relay) in honor of a loved one, please feel free to join us on August 15 at Palo Alto High School. The event begins at 10am on the 15th and ends at 10am on the 16th (but feel free to drop by at anytime).
