We have a lot of fun information packed into this email for you. We’re excited to share some of the wonderful things the American Cancer Society has going on during this holiday season. Check it out:
1. My Cancer Days
The Society has just published a new picture book to help children with cancer express their feelings.
"I wrote My Cancer Days for the smallest warriors," said author Courtney Filigenzi. "Children can have a hard time identifying or describing their feelings. I wanted to help kids find the words they need to express how they're feeling inside."
The 24-page hardcover book is illustrated with original watercolors by Nicole Tadgell, who was inspired by the loss of her sister to childhood illness and her visits with young cancer patients and their families at home and in the hospital.
In My Cancer Days, a little girl with cancer experiences a range of emotions depending on how she feels on different days. On a purple day, for example, she feels scared; on a yellow day, she feels happy. The message is that all these feelings are normal, and that expressing them is a helpful way to cope.
The book is also intended to help adults give their children the support they need. "It's my hope that the book can help families have these difficult conversations," said Filigenzi, "so they can support each other and grow stronger together."
Interested in purchasing this book as a gift? They’re available online now!
Purchase the new book online for $12.95. or http://www.cancer.org/cancer/bookstore/index
2. Amazon Smile - Gift Giving
If you shop on Amazon, this is an absolutely free way to give to the Society. Amazon -- not you -- gives the Society .5% of your purchase total, every time you shop on Amazon.
To make that happen, you must register – for free – on AmazonSmile, and choose the Society as the charity of your choice. Here is a direct link to the Society's AmazonSmile page.
You can use your existing Amazon account and you will find all the same products and prices as on Amazon.com. (Recurring subscribe-and-save purchases and subscription renewals are not currently eligible for AmazonSmile, however.)
Once registered, every time you come back to smile.amazon.com, you will see this wording at the top of the page: "Supporting American Cancer Society, Inc."
The key is remembering to go to smile.amazon.com or the Society's page, instead of amazon.com. It takes a little self-discipline, but it's worth it. It costs you nothing but provides the Society with much needed funds.
3. A Month of Fundraising
As the year comes to a close and the new year is right around the corner, now is the best time to get a jump start on your team fundraising for 2016. Ready for an easy and fun way to raise $100 for your Relay team? Need a few good ideas to share with family, schools, coworkers and friends?
Below is the Hope Fundraising Calendar – 30 days of giving back. Each day has a fun fact, mission or activity to coincide with a fundraising amount. Each day, challenge your loved ones to take on one day’s fact and donate. It’s a great way to spread the mission and continue educating others on why we Relay!
