Each year, across the nation, one event brings together entire communities to take part in the fight against cancer. That event is the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. It’s a time and place where people come to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against a disease that touches too many lives. Relay For Life of Spring Hill is a Top 25 event in Florida!

Our Spring Hill Relay Family Member needs your Support!!

Congratulations on yet another successful Relay For Life. There are many things that make The Spring Hill Relay for Life not only standout but different from other Relays. We put our heart and soul into this event. It is not just a group of people coming together to raise awareness and money to fight this dreaded disease. We might start out as a group of strangers but we become a family. Who offer support, compassion and love to one another through the good times as well as the hard times. We hold and lift each other up with love and understanding. I know you have heard me say it a 100 times and I will say it again. Build it and they will come! We build a family and celebrate life by having our Relay. Then everything else comes from that. Cancer awareness is raised, the mission of the American Cancer Society is shared, people are educated on the services that ACS offers and the cherry on top is the money that is raised. We are not all about the money but about the people. That money comes because we care and want to continue to support not only these services but the research to put an end to cancer!

This year has been a tough one for our Spring Hill Relay Family emotionally with the loss of four members. Through these hard times we are there standing strong and supporting one another. This year for the first time we had the teams who had lost a member join one another to walk the track and join together with one another to remember. Remembering past Relays when these four amazing people walked alongside them. We celebrated their lives and remembered all of the times that we have shared.  Then we all joined together to continue the fight for them.

Sometimes people who do not understand Relay will make the statement “I am so sorry that they lost their fight against cancer” When in reality that person has really run out of time in their fight against cancer. Never have they lost the battle because every day that they are surviving and living their lives they are beating this beast we call cancer. It is then that we step in and continue the fight for them!

It is with a very heavy heart that I ask you to pray for our friend Debbie Koenig as she enters the last steps of her fight in her battle with cancer. She is running out of time and has gone into Hospice for the last leg of her journey. I am asking for prayers for Debbie and Bill as he supports Debbie as she leaves us. Please pray for them and all who love them. Please know that Debbie is my Hero! She looked this beast in the eye and beat it every day and every minute! She has looked cancer in the eye and showed it what she is made of!

As we were celebrating our success and another amazing Relay Debbie was being transferred to Hospice. I told her that I would accept her trophy for the Highest Individual Fundraiser and bring it to her. How she accomplished this while fighting her battle I do not know. What I do know that Relay was very important to her. That she would do anything to stop this disease once and for all. It is for this reason that at our Wrap Up meeting I made a request that we take up the fight for Debbie. Make this the most successful Relay that Spring Hill has ever had. Four the past four years we have been one of the Top 25 Events in the state. I challenged all of our teams to continue fundraising to ensure that Debbie’s fighting spirit continues. Any team that raises an additional $1,000 by the first of August to honor Debbie will become Debbie’s Warriors. There will be a banner at the Relay next year to show that we are picking up where she left off and will continue the fight for her. Please know that this is not about the money but about making 2016 the year that we all looked the Beast in the Eye and showed it what we as a family are made of. Let’s honor Debbie and our other loved ones by making sure we make the Top 25 or maybe even the Top 10 Relays in the state this year! Remember Cancer Fears the Walker and Spring Hill Relay for Life!

You are an amazing group of people you commitment to this event and all that you do to make our event and Relay family  inspire me to be a better person. Thank you in advance for going the extra mile in Debbie’s shoe and wrapping up this year like no other!

Love you all

Maureen
