As I write about my survival, I am about to celebrate twenty years since my first diagnosis. It is a survivor story that is becoming more frequent as advances in cancer research help many more to live longer, quality lives.
The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and other American Cancer Society events help to fund important research and support many services to cancer survivors. Many cancers are becoming chronic diseases that are treatable and manageable.
For ten years after diagnosis, I was cancer free. Since 1999, I have had several recurrences; however, my treatments have not made me sick and I have been able to live a very full, quality life. My most current diagnosis is breast cancer metastasized to the bone, asymptomatic, which means I have no pain. With new medicines available, many do not experience side effects. Early detection is the key to fighting cancer.
My faith and spiritual discipline has sustained me through numerous recurrences. A positive and hopeful attitude has been central to my survival and to the healing process. I am an eternal optimist. This is a gift from my parents and others who have nurtured me.
