Why am I walking?
Please take a moment to read my story and please donate if you can.
Every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Look around, 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer...will it be you?...will it be someone you love? Every year 40,000 women die of breast cancer. My friend Christine died... My friend Jan died... My friend Jessica died... My friend Beth died...
And this year my friend Suzanna died.
I did not die...
Early detection saved my life. It was a routine Monday, June 24,2002 and time for my routine annual mammogram. Looks like trouble. Come back tomorrow for a biopsy, June 25th. No history of cancer in my family, not to worry...but I worried and waited and waited and worried and waited for what seemed like an eternity for the call that came on June 27th at 3:34PM: the biopsy was positive and I had cancer...and I screamed and I cried...and I was scared.
Then I caught my breath and started to take responsibility for my health. I was given the name of a surgeon to call and was told that the next available appointment would be in 6 weeks. Not...I said that I would show up at 8AM the next morning, and every morning, and wait patiently for someone to cancel and an appointment to free up. So the next morning I showed up, and waited and waited and waited and it happened, a cancellation. We scheduled surgery for July 8th but the lumpectomy did not get clear margins so I had a second lumpectomy on July 21st. We got all the cancer and I would need radiation treatments every weekday for 9 weeks. Daily I take my medication to help prevent the cancer from returning.
And now I am celebrating 7 years cancer free, thanking you for your devotion to the cause and for the financial support to our team as together we strive not only to raise funds but also awareness.
Cancer is scary, and destructive, and painful, and oh so many things, but yet Cancer is limited.
Cancer is so limited... It cannot cripple Love It cannot shatter Hope It cannot corrode Faith It cannot destroy Peace It cannot kill Friendship It cannot suppress Memories It cannot silence Courage It cannot invade the Soul It cannot steal Eternal Life It cannot conquer the Spirit. (author unknown)
