Hope Starts With Me!
Why am I walking? I am walking and leading Team GoPink!DC in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides for Breast Cancer” Walk on October 31, 2009 for two reasons: My first reason is to thank my wonderful community of supporters for their devotion to important causes such as “Making Strides”, since my first of two diagnoses of breast cancer 13 years ago. Because of the efforts by the American Cancer Society and other organizations to raise funds for medical research, I am alive, healthy, and living life to its fullest. Medical advancements will ensure that those diagnosed with breast cancer are as fortunate in their survival.
My second reason is to deliver a message of hope to the estimated 200,000 thousand new cases of invasive breast cancer this year and the several million living survivors. If there is a silver lining to cancer, it is that it can bring people together in unexpected ways. My breast cancer is my connection to GoPink!DC, a dragon boat paddling team of survivors in Washington, D.C. Since joining my team, dragon boating, a rapidly growing paddling sport rooted in Chinese culture, has become my passion. It’s a fun way to get great exercise while being on the water (my home away from home) on a regular basis. Because of paddling, I am stronger than any other time in my life! I have gotten to know my teammates and experience the excitement of festivals where hundreds of breast cancer survivor paddlers compete and celebrate living and sisterhood. I now have an inspirational social circle of fellow survivors who see the glass as half full. And so, my message of hope is while cancer is a curse, it can also lead to new worlds and new adventures, a new source of strength and joy. One I discovered is dragon boat paddling with GoPink!DC. Yes, there is life after cancer! Today, there is more hope than ever for people facing breast cancer. However, there is much work to be done to find promising new treatments, increase awareness about the importance of mammograms, help all women get access to screenings and care, and connect those impacted by the disease with the information, day-to-day help, and emotional support they need to wage their battle against breast cancer.
