Why We are Making Strides

Welcome to Team Duke Cancer Institute. For a third year, Duke Cancer Institute is partnering with the American Cancer Society to serve as the Local Presenting Sponsor for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Duke Cancer Institute is a single entity integrating and aligning cutting-edge research and world-class education with compassionate clinical care. The institute is home to some of the most renowned medical specialists, physician-scientists and researchers in the world. Our researchers are on a quest to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for breast cancer. Synchronous collaboration moves us further, faster and with greater Purpose. The American Cancer Society partners with us to support our astonishing breakthrough discoveries. The society has invested more than $1.4 million in breast cancer research grants and scholarships at Duke over the past fiscal year.

We invite you to team up with the DCI and the American Cancer Society to raise funds to help keep our important breast cancer research moving forward.

Team Duke Cancer Institute is led by oncology breast surgeon and honorary team captain E. Shelley Hwang, MD. Breast surgeon Jennifer Plichta, MD, director of the Breast Risk Assessment Clinic at Duke, is co-captain.

Team Duke Women's Cancer Care Raleigh is led by honorary team captain Gayle DiLalla, MD.

Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way. Today one of every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer reaches out to the American Cancer Society for help and support. The donations our team raises will enable investment in groundbreaking breast cancer research, free information and services for women diagnosed with the disease, and access to mammograms for women who need them. Our donations will help more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors celebrate another birthday this year.

Why We Support the American Cancer Society

Saving lives from breast cancer starts one team, one walker, and one dollar at a time. We know that the American Cancer Society is the leader in the fight to end breast cancer. We know that supporting them will ensure that if you need someone to talk to anytime of the day or night, they’ll be there. If your friend is losing her hair from chemo, your mother needs a ride to treatment, or a loved one needs a place to stay when treatment is far from home, they will be there to help.

Join us and together we will walk for a world without breast cancer.

Welcome to our Team Page. We’ve formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It’s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
