Making Strides of South Sound

Pink Ninjas

Why we are walking

Our team captain, Hollie, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. After a lumpectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy and 33 radiation treatments, Hollie is CANCER FREE. She has made a vow to give back to her community and help others battling this disease. Funds raised during the our walk will help continue the resources she utilized during her cancer journey:

Breast Cancer Screenings and Mammograms

Hollie is living proof that early detection saves lives and by giving you are helping to pay for breast screenings and mammograms at Carol Milgard Breast Center where she was diagnosed.

Look Good Feel Better

There were days during treatment when she didn't want to "look" like a cancer patient. The Look Good Feel Better program is a free two-hour workshop for women undergoing cancer treatment. This program helps improve the self-image, appearance, and quality of life of patients by teaching beauty techniques to help cope with the temporary appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Donations to our walk will continue this program at Good Samaritan Cancer Center in Puyallup and St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

The Pierce County Cancer Survivorship Conference

The morning her hair fell out after her first round of chemotherapy, Holliewas on my way to meet her mom at The Pierce County Cancer Survivorship Conference. This annual event was created to provide support and celebrate the community of cancer patients and survivors in the South Sound. Funds from my walk will help sponsor this incredible free event.

Free Wigs

Hollie's first wig was provided for free thanks to funds raised during past Making Strides walks

Research Grants

Research grants are the key to finding a cure. Funds raised from our walk will go to grants at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance where Hollie received herlife saving treatment.

Time to WALK!

During Hollie's treatments, her fight song was "Walk" by the Foo Fighters. She danced on her grave. She ran through the fire. Let's help more families touched by breast cancer do the same.

Here is Hollie's favorite version of "Walk", as performed by her friends

Welcome to our Team Page. We’ve formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It’s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
