Making Strides of Central Park

LITA's Story

As you know, we lost our beloved Mamá Marytza to a well-fought battle with breast cancer last January 10, 2015. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer two and a half years ago, after having survived and recovered from an abdominal aorta repair surgery. She then had a mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy treatment right after that. We all believed it to be gone forever. We then came to learn that she had to yet fight another important battle - her breast cancer came back with vengeance. First, a stage four tumor was uncovered in the upper lobe section of her right lung. While she was incredibly upset about the news, our "guerrera" was up to the challenge and willing to undergo any kind of treatment to defeat the beast.

Unfortunately, Mamá Marytza underwent emergency surgery on 12/22/14 to remove a metastasized tumor to the brain that had bled. While the surgery was successful, the doctors could not do much for her since her right lung partly collapsed. Due to the glim prognosis for her survival and advanced stage of her disease, we decided to take Mamá Marytza home with hospice services on 12/29/14, so that she can be surrounded with all the love of her family and close friends. She finally found her peace and passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015 (a date that will forever live in our hearts).

Why I am Making Strides

Because I know I will make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer. I know that by raising funds and walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, I will help save lives from breast cancer.

I believe that one day breast cancer will never steal another year from anyone's life. Making Strides is not only my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, but it is also a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. That's why I'm walking.

Why I Support the American Cancer Society

Every day, the American Cancer Society helps people take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer or find it early when it is easiest to treat. They provide free information and services when and where people need it throughout their journey to get well. They are investing in groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat, and cure breast cancer, and are working to ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.

I have signed up to walk and fundraise with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I hope you will consider joining my team and/or making a donation in support of my efforts.

Together, we can make strides to end breast cancer!

Welcome to our Team Page. We’ve formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. It’s helping fund innovative research. It’s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. It’s providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things - hard work and getting the word out. And we're out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.
