Mission Programs (74%) As the only charitable organization to fight cancer on all fronts, the American Cancer Society invests donations in programs to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. This includes:
Prevention and Early Detection Education We empower people to take control of their health by teaching when, where and how to receive screenings and make lifestyle changes in order to reduce their cancer risk. The Illinois Division also partners with health care providers to offer free or low-cost screenings for under or uninsured people who often receive a cancer diagnosis at a later, less treatable stage.
Patient Services and Support No organization is better positioned than the American Cancer Society to help patients and their families work through the multi-faceted issues that make a cancer journey so challenging. In Illinois our Patient Navigation Services continued to post double-digit growth as we help cancer patients with a full complement of free services aimed at improving quality of life for nearly 70 people who, on average, turn to us each day.
Research The American Cancer Society continues to be the largest non-governmental source of research funding with astounding results—virtually every major cancer breakthrough in the past 60 years can be traced to Society funding, and 42 of the investigators funded early in their careers have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. Currently $22.2 million in Society cancer research are active in Illinois institutions.
Fundraising (17%) When asked to name a health charity that raises money to address health problems, people name the American Cancer Society far more often than any other organization. Many people who have lost loved ones to cancer find comfort and a new sense of purpose in supporting the Society’s mission to eliminate cancer as a major health threat.
Management and General (9%) Stewardship is a core value that directs administration of all American Cancer Society programs and services, guiding us to invest contributions for maximum impact while also meeting or exceeding established industry standards for measuring program and fundraising expense ratios. The American Cancer Society, Inc. meets the standards set by the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance.
