In Brooklyn alone in 2008, your donations helped to fund:

  • 400 wig fittings and free wigs
  • Personal assistance for 2,725 cancer patients and their families
  • Personal support and comfort from a breast cancer survivor through our Reach to Recovery program for 150 women recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  Many of these women also received a free brassiere and temporary prosthesis.
  • Patient Navigator visits to over 1,500 cancer patients to connect them to support groups, transportation assistance, legal and immigration help and end of life care.
  • Over 300 rides to treatments for patients through our Road to Recovery program.
  • Look Good, Feel Better sessions for 220 women to learn how to deal with the side effects of treatment.  Each session includes a free make-up kit valued at $250.
  • Support for over 100 men through Man to Man, our prostate cancer support group.

We’re providing free screenings to those without health insurance.  Twenty five percent of Brooklyn residents have no health insurance.  The American Cancer Society through a unique partnership with the New York State Cancer Service Program and New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and local public and private hospitals and community health clinics provided over 7,000 free mammograms, pap test and colon screenings for local Brooklyn residents.
