Extinguish Cancer

It was at the inaugural Arizona DetermiNation event, the January 2009 PF Chang's Rock n' Roll Arizona 1/2 Marathon, that Danielle first time runner met Carla - an instrumental person and charity runner for DetermiNation.Since meeting last year these two women have been actively involved in volunteering for the American Cancer Society and have created a friendship that arose from a hardship-Cancer!

 Team Captain, Danielle Jacques and initial member Carla Anderson at first didn’t have a lot in common. Danielle being an interior designer with Robb and Stucky, who enjoyed golfing and hosting dinner parties at her home for family and friends, was very different from Carla, a CPA with an international accounting firm, who traveled around the country in search of the most extreme mountain biking courses, while trying to make time for triathlon training.  But, these two successful young women discovered quickly they did have one thing in common:  Danielle and Carla both lost parents at a very young age to colon cancer. Bob Jacques, Danielle’s father, passed away on July 26th, 2008, when Danielle was 29, and Carla was only 23 when she lost her mother, Sally Anderson, on October 6th, 2005. Their losses brought them together and today they have created a running team Extinguish Cancer (AKA charity runners) who run to raise money for the American Cancer Society-Determination. Team Extinguish Cancer is part of the American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation who are a group of dedicated individuals who are in training for endurance events, while at the same time raising funds for and awareness of the American Cancer Society.The young women were top fundraisers in last year Half Marathon and this year to make a bigger difference, a bigger impact in the fight against cancer, and to raise more money to find a cure- they gathered up other young athletes who can  help make every mile more meaningful.

Jessica Martinez was their first charity runner to join their team. Unfortunately, Jessica also lost a parent to cancer. Danielle and Jessica met over 5 years ago and Danielle was a friend to Jessica when her father Cruz Martinez was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2004. As Jessica embarked through the toughest time of her life, watching her father loose his battle to cancer on Feb 23, 2006, Danielle was there for her but little did she know nor did Danielle know she would be enduring the same loss 2 yrs later. As Danielle stood by Jessica, Jessica did the same for Danielle when Bob passed from this devastating disease. Danielle and Jessica have a common passion that makes them the strong women they are today. Jessica chose to become a charity runner this year to honor her father.

In memory of their parents, Danielle, Carla, and Jessica will be running in the 2010 PF Chang’s Rock n’ Roll Arizona Half-Marathon. Two other members of Extinguish Cancer, Ali Newman and Amanda Coppola will also be running in the Half -Marathon. Although either of these women have never experienced the loss of a loved one to this devastating disease-they don’t want anyone else to experience what Danielle, Carla, and Jessica have endured. That is why being the wonderful friends, philanthropist, and passionate people they are, have jumped on board to help fight cancer and support us, our families and to help prevent this disease from touching others by becoming charity runners.Together we are out to save lives and stop the spread!
