Recapping the 26th Annual Chili Cook-off:

On March 5, 2015 Mother Nature was on our side once again as cool temperatures gave way to bright sunshine and a gorgeous day for cooking chili!  For the second year in a row, thousands of Mobilians flocked to The Grounds to enjoy the 26th Annual American Cancer Society Chili Cook-off, sponsored by Trax Tire Pros.  Our new home has been quite accommodating as we continue to grow and enhance our event.  This year the Chili Cook-Off raised over $185,000 for the American Cancer Society and its fight against cancer.

With 74 teams competing for bragging rights for the best Chili in Mobile, our patrons certainly did not leave hungry!  Whether it was all meat chili, meat and beans, vegetarian/poultry or wild game, our chefs certainly put forth their best for both the judges and all in attendance.  Each year our judges have the unenviable task of determining the top chili in each category as well as an overall winner.  Taking the top honor on that day was Chili Cook-Off veteran Thompson Engineering.  For their efforts, Thompson walked away with loot including a new pot donated by Trax Tire Pros, a plaque commemorating their achievement, as well as other goodies donated by our sponsors.

Once again the children’s area, sponsored by Jesco Construction, was a hit among the young chili goers.  They were entertained all day with creative craft projects, moonwalks, animals from The Gulf Coast Zoo, and the Azalea Trail Maids.  A new addition to the children’s area lineup this year was the Walk on Water Bubbles where kids lined up all day to experience the sensation of “walking on water!”  And, of course, the famous remote control car races were once again a treat for everyone.  The Faulkner State Sun Chiefs, Johnny No, and PEEK provided our live music and kept the crowd energized and entertained throughout the day.  Our home-town media personalities served as emcees throughout the morning and into the afternoon as our guests got to see Devon Walsh, Bill Riales, and John Nodar from WKRG and Dan Brennan and Shelby Mitchell from 95 KSJ in person and even sneak a few autographs.

Preparing for the Chili Cook-Off takes months of hard work from a number of very dedicated and self-less individuals and this year was no exception.  The American Cancer Society wants to thank the 2015 Chili Cook-Off committee who devoted so much time and energy to ensuring this event was a success.

The American Cancer Society would also like to thank all of the generous sponsors who chose the Chili Cook-off as an event worthy of their donation.  It goes without saying that our event would not be anything without all of the teams who participate each year.  You truly are our heart and soul!  Lastly, the American Cancer Society would like to thank the community for embracing this event each year.  Our sincerest appreciation goes out to everyone for helping the American Cancer Society continue its crusade by helping people Stay Well, Get Well, Find Cures and Fight Back!
