The Day of Relay
After months of asking for donations and holding fundraisers, Relay Day is finally here! So what's it all about?
As Relay begins, participants pitch tents and get their campsites set up for the night ahead. Relay begins with the Opening Ceremony and the Survivor Lap when cancer survivors walk the track while the rest of the participants cheer them on. Once they complete the first lap, they are joined on the track by their caregivers for another lap. Then everyone joins them and Relay is officially under way!
At nightfall, the crowd gathers again for the Luminaria Ceremony. Glow sticks are placed in bags around the track, each one bearing the name of someone who has been affected by cancer - in honor of those who have survived, and in memory of those we have lost.
At midnight, the new Fight Back Ceremony that symbolizes the emotional commitment we each make to the fight against cancer will begin. Participants will be asked to sign a banner and a pledge card about the action that person will take to save a life.
Throughout the night, team members take turns walking laps, trying to keep at least one member of their team on the track at all times. New friends are made and old friends are visited while music and other entertainment keep the walkers going. In the end, Relay For Life is not something you can read or even hear about - it's something that you experience.
In the morning there is breakfast, a Children’s and Victory Lap and the Closing Ceremonies.
So come be a part of Relay For Life!
